The world's oldest-known canoe, the Pesse canoe, was found in the Netherlands and is now housed in the Drents Museum in Assen. Radiocarbon dating indicates that it was built during the Middle Stone Age.

Canoe can be propelled by a single-bladed paddle, which can be pushed either in a standing or a kneeling position. However, kneeling paddlers have been found to be more efficient than the standing ones.

In canoeing and kayaking terms, a strainer refers to a large tree that stands down the water. This is a hurdle as water can pass through it, but not vessels and people. Hitting a strainer may be fatal for canoers and kayakers.
